My students need foamy letters, feathers, gemstones, glittery paint, and jumbo collage letters to create artistic letters of the alphabet during the entire school year.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I remember painting every day, creating masterpieces my mom still has, and singing the alphabet in kindergarten. With very limited art supplies and resources, my students are limited in what they can create in class.
The majority of my students are bused in from a low income apartment building community.
Most are from Spanish-speaking homes and have limited English speaking support. Some did not attend pre-kinder and began kindergarten without any kindergarten skills. They began kindergarten already trying to catch up.
My Project
I want to give my students an opportunity to make a connection with the letters of the alphabet by making artistic collage letters. In kindergarten, we teach the alphabet throughout the school year, and we expect students to master the names and sounds of the letters through books and writing. Studies have proven that art helps students learn.
My students have created apples for the letter "A" and a snake for the letter "S." They are proud to see their creations in the classroom and sometimes glance at them when I ask them for the name of the letter. I also have to share that these are 2 letters the entire class has mastered. I have a list of ideas I want my students to create for the entire alphabet, but I will find it difficult without the supplies needed.
Please help my students create letter collages for the alphabet throughout the school year.
