A House Divided Unit

My students need 30 copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird" with a teacher guide.

This project is fully funded

This is my first year teaching, and I'm teaching language arts to sophomores and juniors. I am trying to create reading projects that go beyond the classroom textbook and expand my students reading background.

I have a small junior class of about 35 students who are lower ability level who need interesting, yet, thought-provoking reading materials instead of the standard textbook. The majority of my students are not college bound, but I do seek to provide them with classroom novels that will engage them with real-life situations, like To Kill A Mockingbird. My classroom funds are limited. I have spent the majority of them on another racially divided novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

To ensure that my students get a well rounded view of the racially divided South during the earlier 20th century I will need 30 copies of To Kill A Mockingbird. My plan is to teach Huck Finn, TKAM, and then the up-and-coming novelist, Kathryn Stockett's first novel, The Help. I feel that by reading these three novels written about the same type of topic but during different eras will give my students different perspectives on issues in their own lives.
