Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are full of curiosity about the world around them. So far this year we set up 2 hydroponic classroom gardens, 2 raised garden beds, and we set up a habitat for our bearded dragon and our regal jumping spider. My students researched what greens our bearded dragon could eat and are growing endive, escarole and kale to feed him daily. Their curiosity then turned to Bellatrix the ball python. How does she move? What does she eat? Are snakes slimy? Why does she shed her skin like that? Why does she flick her tongue? Do snakes have ears? Does she have bones? These are just a few of the questions my students posted on our wonder wall.
"Can we research ball pythons and set up a habitat for Bellatrix in our classroom" my students eagerly asked.
They excitedly went on myON to research the needs of ball pythons and started compiling a list of items we would need to replicate her natural habitat. From heat sources to decorations, my students handed me their list of items and here we are! This project is a result of their research, curiosity, and motivation to have Bellatrix as part of our school family.
Having Bellatrix in our classroom will allow my students to observe her up close and record her behaviors. This will undoubtedly lead to even more questions to research. In addition to teaching my students about animal husbandry, I also visit other classrooms with our classroom pets. I recently took both our bearded dragon and the ball python to the fifth grade classes. All the students got to feel her backbone in person. They also observed her characteristics to those of the bearded dragon and we completed a Venn Diagram together. Please help me support my students curiosity!
