This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are building a classroom that looks like a home environment for our students with special needs. That means creating a realistic home environment with a bed to make, a rug to sweep and vacume, a laundry center with laundry to sort and an ironing board, a bathroom center with toothbrush holders and a shower caddy, a kitchen center with cutting boards, and windows with curtains to hang and change. Our students need to practice their home engineering, home technical, and home mechanical skills in realistic settings. This type of work can not be done from a desk. It needs to be hands-on. The items in our cart- a bed, curtains, vacume, rug, cutting boards and safety knives, toothbrush holders and shower caddy's - will be used to create this realistic environment. In our home technology class we will be teaching the skills that many of us take for granted, but that are just out-of-reach for students with developmental disabilites. The skills are attainable when we have the resources to teach them through direct instruction in a classroom enviornment that looks like home. Our students with special needs require hands on experience to develop their skills and independence. We plan to teach our students to navigate and maintain a modern living environment by giving them a classroom where they can practice these skills in real life.
