My Students

I have the privilege of teaching at four Title I schools and science coach in my district that have diverse populations of students from all over the world. There are students from ten different countries at my schools.

My students enjoy reading, project-based learning activities, robotics and being creative.

I have the unique opportunity to teach and help coordinate STEM lessons across my district. My students shine when I bring LEGO bricks or electronic kits into a lesson about animals, critical thinking, or problem-solving skills. With our students' economic backgrounds, they don't get many opportunities at home to interact with materials to encourage creative thinking.

My Project

Disc golf is a sport that has been growing across our community. Not only is disc golf fun, but it also provides an avenue for physical activity at a minimum cost and can be educational.

There are 3 major goals of this project that I plan to achieve: introduce students to the game of disc golf, learning the physics of disc, and promoting an active lifestyle with a minimum cost.

I will promote disc golf at our districts middle and elementary schools in after school clubs with the ultimate goal of creating a disc golf course at our district’s high school. This grant will provide 3 portable disc golf baskets, 24 sets of disc and bags to carry the disc.

The first goal is to introduce our students to the game of disc golf. The game of disc golf can be played with a minimum amount of equipment and doesn’t cost anything to play.

The next goal is to teach students the physics behind the actual discs. Not all disc are made the same and perform the same way. Just like golf, there are putters, mid-range, fairway drivers and distance drivers. Each disc has 4 different numbers that tell about the flight characteristics of the speed, glide, turn and fade. I want my students to understand these numbers how they affect the flight characteristics of each disc.

Lastly, I want to promote physical activity for our students. So many of our students go home and spend hours on their devices in front of a screen. Disc golf will give our students the opportunity to get outdoors and exercise. The Professional Disc Golf Association states that a person averages walking 3 miles on an 18 hole disc golf course. This amount of physical activity will benefit our students in many ways.
