Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a neighborhood high school in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago. Albany Park is an extremely diverse and multicultural community, with residents from all over the world. Many of my students are bilingual or multilingual and speak a language other than English at home.

My Project

My students learn best in the instructional setting, which is a smaller special education class with more one-on-one support. They enter class reading anywhere from a kindergarten to eighth grade level, and have often had negative experiences relating to reading and writing. This project will help change that!

My students helped create this list of books and authors to add to our class library.

Student choice is so important and letting them have some say in our project is very meaningful. We have independent reading time every three days in class and watching them get engrossed in their books has been incredible.

We lost our school librarian five years ago due to budget cuts and many students have never visited their local Chicago Public Library branch. This makes having a diverse, up-to-date, and high-interest class library even more important.
