My Project
I won’t lie: I am immensely grateful that Donor’s Choose added the option for us to create a project under the heading “warmth, care & hunger”.
For some of my students, the only solid meal they eat on a daily basis is the one that is provided for them in our cafeteria.
Furthermore, my students (if left to their own devices) hardly ever choose nutritional snacks or hydration that is right for them: they seek out caffeine, sugar and sodium-infused candy, chips, energy drinks, sodas, sports drinks and juices that simply galvanize them, briefly, with energy, then crash them, face-first, into their desks.
I seek to change all of this by keeping healthy snacks and a case of water in my classroom for students who need a burst of nutrition or hydration throughout the school day.
It is no secret: healthy and hydrated students learn better. And I hate interrupting class to send students to the drinking fountain to get hydrated. Quick note: the water fountains on my floor of the school don’t work and have not worked for the last two years, forcing thirsty students to walk long distances and be absent for long stretches of class time. I have high expectations of my students. I put them through rigorous, college-worthy work in my class. I want them to be well-fed and hydrated in order to meet the challenges I put to them each day.
