A Healthy Me is a Happy Me!

My students need one What's Inside Me? Apron, a Healthy Foods Book Set, and one Dell Latitude laptop computer to learn about making healthy food choices and happy living.

My Students

I am a second grade teacher at a Title I elementary school located in Brooklyn's East New York. All my students qualify for free lunch and dinner and many come to class hungry and wanting for the basics all children need. With so many different cultures, backgrounds and learning styles represented in my classroom I am in constant need of resources to engage, challenge, and elevate my wonderful and deserving 2nd graders.

Many of my children come to school inadequately nurtured - both in food and love.

I want to give them the knowledge and life skills needed for them to grow up happy and healthy.

My Project

We've heard it so many times - eat healthy and feel healthy and happy! Unfortunately, many of my students do not eat healthy with most of their food bought at the corner bodega (store).

This winter I want to start a Healthy Me unit where we'll learn about the different food groups, how our bodies grow and move, and the math behind smart food choices.

I'm requesting a What's Inside Me? apron, Healthy Food book set, and a Dell Inspiron laptop computer which will be used to teach healthy eating and living habits.

We'll use the What's Inside Me apron to see the different organs in our bodies and how the digestive system works. The Healthy Foods books will be used for independent reading and small group instruction as we better understand the food groups and what combinations make sense for kids. With all the different cultures of the islands, Bangladesh, and African nations represented in my classroom, we'll celebrate the native dishes of the different countries.

The Dell Inspiron laptop will be used for whole and small group instruction, and for individual student work. (It will be connected to the classroom SMARTBoard for all to see.) There is a myriad of educational health websites, including the US government's MyPlate. Students will create their own tracking accounts and, over a month period, see their eating and moving habits.

This unit will be co-taught with the school's Science and Gym teachers.
