A Hair-Raising Experience is Worth a Thousand Words

Help me give my students Play-Doh tools, styling heads, and books about hair for our barber shop - hair salon during our beginning of the year and building units.

My Project

During our Beginning of the Year Unit we talk about different kinds of families and make connections on how families are the same and how they are different. In Pre-K, hair's importance goes beyond just its appearance. It plays a role in self-expression, identity, and personal care. Understanding the importance of hair can help young children develop a positive self-image and foster their sense of self. Allowing children to choose their own hairstyles (or having a say in them) can help them feel empowered and in control of their appearance, fostering a sense of body autonomy. We are requesting Play-Doh tools, styling heads, and books about hair for our barber shop/hair salon for our beginning of the year and building units.

Encouraging discussions about different hairstyles and hair textures can help children become more aware of diversity and build empathy for others.

Learning about different hair types and how they are cared for can also help children understand and appreciate diversity. This can lead to a more inclusive and accepting classroom environment.
