My Students

We are ninety percent free lunches. Many come from single parent, working class, Spanish speaking environments. Opportunities in abundance on the other side of town seem like a fantasy in our classroom. My students aren't vacationing; instead, they read or draw to travel. I have to ask important questions, checking clarity because what seems a given to me, may not be for my students who struggle to see "fantasy" in the urban environment.

This year I am creating cross-curricular art lessons around a novel series and grade level books from kindergarten to fifth-grade.

My students need the context that picture books provide as they are learning to speak the language. Previously I had not read all the books that each grade will read this year. Now I desperately turn the pages of each book as I am attempting to create brand new lesson plans. Tying the district art curriculum for all ages and the text from these books will make this ATPE teacher's lesson plans amazing! The visual context we create will make remembrances of these stories as well as being a multi-sensory extravaganza!

My Project

Picture books are multi-sensory, which aids a child’s growing mind and stimulates their imagination. Not only will my students hear the story, they will see the illustrations and I will have them imagine the smells. These picture books are written at a higher reading level and use amazingly complex vocabularies that my students need to hear. Some requested titles include Junie B. Jones, Flowers for Sarajevo, In the Middle of Fall, The Book of Mistakes, Flashlight Night, Snowmen at Night, Wolf in the Snow, The Treasure Box, and The Lonely Mailman.

The illustrations of a picture book are a powerful way to help English learners comprehend a story.

These books can help my students that are having difficulty reading and the illustrations will help them figure out the meaning of what they are reading.

Whatever the reason children are drawn towards a book, it’s a means to get them to read, imagine and create.
