My students need copies of classic good books such as Dr. Seuss and Curious George to develop a love of reading. They also need a bookcase.

My Students
Do you remember as a child laughing hysterically at Curious George and searching everywhere for Sneetches or Loraxes? My students have yet to meet these classic characters that captured our imaginations when we were young! We need these children's classics on the shelves of our library to inspire!
We are located in Chesapeake, VA in a moderate income community.
My students lack a school library that is filled with books that have stood the test of time. What makes a book a children's classic? The qualities that make a book memorable? Unforgettable characters, top-notch writing, outstanding art work or just plain silliness--often determine whether it will stand the test of time and reach classic status. And a book's staying power --- its ability to remain popular with young readers and children is another clear indication that a book is destined for greatness! Classic characters still capture the imagination and attention of our children. A love of reading comes from finding books that bring laughter and joy AS WELL as teach standards of learning. Our school needs Dr. Seuss and Curious George on our shelves to make children giggle, pick up the next book, AND learn our English Standards of Learning such as rhyming text, phonemic awareness, and other core reading skills!!
My Project
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. How true this quote is, an inspirational and awe inspiring thought by none other that Dr. Seuss. Our collection of childrens classics have been read so many times that the pages are torn and taped... the bindings held together by glue... and the pages tattered and ripped. But still... our young students (grades K-2) continue to flock to the shelves to check out such classics as Dr. Seuss and Curious George (the ever so popular naughty and clever monkey!!!) We've become technological wizards in our schools with SmartBoards, Kindles, and Nooks... Ebooks, Podcasts, and Blogs... but sometimes kids just want to laugh along with a great book... and our technology can take a step back and supplement the book instead of the other way around!! Ahhhhhhhhhh.... the sounds of children giggling while reading a great classic book... does anything sound better than that???!!!!!
In our modern age of SmartBoards, Kindles, EReaders, and IPODS... we've forgotten the feeling created by relaxing, holding, and giggling with the great books of old.
What child doesn't grow up having memorized Dr Seuss quotes? His words are so lyrical and rhythmical, it's nearly impossible not to remember them... and the mischievous monkey in Curious George has been embraced by children and adults alike since 1941! These books are powerful-they have staying power-and they need to be READ!!
