My students need a good place to sit and think. They need floor cushions for a comfy spot to work independently.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My English Language Learner students and I are learning how to code this year. We learned that we have to collaborate a lot more to learn these computer languages. We moved our desks from rows to groups. We have been working hard creating apps in the MIT App Inventor program and designing websites with HTML.
As the unfamiliar computer language becomes familiar, the students have settled into their routine and their personalities shine through.
Some like to design things for their families and others are showing interests in helping their communities with things like animal adoption events. Some want to work with headphones and some even code while sitting on the floor. When I asked them why they were there, they answered that they just wanted a different place to sit and think.
Many of my students come from noisy and busy apartment lives. They might not have time to do homework when they get home because they have to help babysit or start chores. Others have come here as refugees and they don't even have a computer at home.
My Project
By providing different seating options, students can take more ownership over their environment. They have very little choice in so many matters in their lives. At least in my class, they can choose where they can work independently.
They can have the flexibility to move either to a desk or to a soft, colorful spot on the floor in a quiet place.
I think that small creature comforts like these make learning more enjoyable. Not to mention that I have some students who just don't fit in their student desks. The desks are tiny and even though many students fit in them, I have some very tall students who would really appreciate being able to stretch out and work comfortably.
