A Good Foundation In Reading Helps To Eliminate Bullying
My students need the book, Bullying in Schools, and children's books, such as David Goes to School, Jason's Bus Ride, and other books to help teach them character traits.

My Students
Were you the victim of bullying as a child? Did you witness someone being bullied? Were you a child who teased in fun and did not intend to hurt the feelings of others? Bullying takes many forms and affects many individuals from the bully to the victim to friends of both.
I teach at a small, rural Title I school.
This project requests materials for the thirty-two first graders. The students are lively, energetic individuals and enjoy the experience of school. The average per capita income for my county is $17,225. The poverty rate in my county in 2008 was 21.5%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2008 was 13.2% (U.S. Census Bureau). With today's economy I am sure that the statistics are even more daunting. Approximately eighty percent of the students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
The requested books, such as, David Goes to School, Ira Sleeps Over, Jason's Bus Ride, Ming Lo Moves the Mountain, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and others, will help the first graders to learn important character traits. A book is a tool that helps us to learn educational and social skills.
Our goal is to teach the children, through book studies and discussions, about appropriate behavior. What some first-graders think of as "fun" and "play," is actually the beginning stages of bullying. We believe that if the children learn and understand the effects of negative behavior, and learn to empathize with others, then we will have less incidents of bullying in school.
This project is important to me because the earlier we teach the students about what constitutes bullying and acceptable vs.
unacceptable behavior, the more of a positive impact we can make in their lives. It is important that they learn that we are unique and special in our own way. I want the children to build up each others strengths and focus on the positive strengths that we each possess.
