My Students
I teach Advanced Placement Statistics and 3 different high school engineering courses. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and home lives. Every year, I find myself calling them "my kids" because it's not long before they seem to be an extended part of my family. You hear their daily stories of what's going on in their lives and, just like with my own children, all I want for them is to see them be successful... to dream big... and have all the tools they will need to make those dreams a reality.
Most of my students (especially the engineering ones) WANT to be in class and are excited about the lessons and projects that they get to be involved in.
It's inspiring to see their genuine curiosity and desire to know more. For my statistics students, many find success and enjoyment in a math class for the first time, even though it is a subject most people cringe at when they hear it. When students are excited and interested, the involvement level goes up... and so does the learning!
My Project
A good calculator can make a world of difference to a student, especially in an AP Statistics class. These calculators have features that will help reduce the tedious, time consuming calculations which lead to frustration. It is a necessity for AP Statistics students for both their class work and when they take the National College Board AP Exam at the end of the school year.
These students need the right tools to better understand the materials and be successful.
The statistical and graphing functions of the TI-84 calculator is the best choice for all my students, both Engineering and Mathematics. When it comes to their end of course exams, they need to be familiar with the tools (calculator) they will need, and they can't use computer programs... just a calculator. The ones we currently have available for them are old, worn out, and glitchy, with most of the button labels worn away. They will be using these calculators every day.
