At our school, we foster a community of students with strong character and high self-esteem who display critical thinking skills that will enable them to become life-long learners. Our staff members and parents work together to educate more than 400 children in grades preK-6th. Our school is a Title I-funded school with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Every student deserves to have a personal library of their own and more than half of my students don't own or have books at home.
My class consists of 30 curious, passionate, vivacious, students who love to read. Through their hard work and dedication, they have been selected to partake in an intensive reading program. This program is rigorous, fast-paced, and fosters a community of learners who model excellence, integrity, and ever-evolving skills for the 21st century. Though students have this opportunity, many of them are lacking the necessary resources to continue working at home. Having the supplies needed will boost their confidence and allow them to be the bright shining academics leaders they have proven to be.
My Project
Students in my class will feel seen and heard after reading books with characters that look like them and will be able to personally connect with character who share similar life experiences. Receiving these books will empower my students. These books will help develop critical thinking skills in my students and will allow them to bring their background knowledge, experiences, abilities, and interests to our class discussions and assignments. Having books they can relate to with characters that look like them will help me rebuilding or extend their love for reading.
