This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you think of a life changing experience that started you on the path you are on today? For me, that would be my time spent volunteering, working and exploring abroad. I would like to provide that same opportunity for students by leading a 3-week trip to Riobamba, Ecuador.
We are a non-screened public high located in the poorest congressional district in the nation.
More than 94% of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. To say that my students face a lot of challenges in their daily lives is an understatement. Their stories are unimaginable but their perseverance is awe-inspiring.
Despite having many obstacles, my students strive to do their best for themselves, their school and their families. The dedicated staff members at my school are trying their best to nurture young men and women of integrity who will one day become leaders who make a positive impact in their local and global communities.
Each of the 13 students going on this trip have shown themselves to be leaders. These motivated students are involved in a variety of activities. All 13 students are on the path to college, and I hope this experience helps them to become more caring, committed, and confident global citizens.
My Project
The funding that I am requesting would be split among the 13 phenomenal students that have been nominated and accepted into the program for the summer of 2016. The trip costs $4,500 but because Global Glimpse is a non-profit with the belief that all students should have access to this amazing opportunity, many of our scholars received scholarships and need to raise a total of $500. This is still a daunting amount for most students, and I am trying to help out.
While on the trip, students will take part in a variety of activities including teaching English lessons, creating a Community Action Project with a local agency, working alongside someone in a local industry, sight-seeing, living on a dollar a day, and hearing from various speakers on topics including poverty, commerce, government, education, and history.
My amazing students go through daily struggles that are unimaginable, yet these very same students want to turn around and help those in worse situations.
What kind of person must you be to search for ways to help others when you are living a life of need yourself? Only the strongest, bravest, future leaders push themselves in these ways!
I see the potential in these children, and they see the potential in themselves, but we need your help to see our dreams of changing the world come to life!
