This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A lot of learning takes place during art. For example, a previous student created a picture of herself "riding a unicorn with a frog to a rainbow party." She wrote about her illustration and shared it with her friends. What a fun & meaningful way for her to develop writing and speaking skills.
My kindergarten students are 5 and 6 years old.
Among other things, they are eager to learn how to write, read, count, add and subtract. They are also eager to express their creativity and develop their imaginations.
Due to the high level of poverty, 100% of the students at my school receive FREE breakfast and lunch daily. Many of them are learning to speak English as their second language.
My students are lacking experiences that children from middle and high income levels are fortunate to have. Many of them do not have access to art materials at home, and do not participate in extra curricular sports, activities and classes. This increases the importance of providing these opportunities to them at school.
My Project
According to Picasso, "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." Unfortunately, Picasso would have a hard time seeing children express themselves as artists in current classrooms across America.
I'm requesting enough paper, canvasses, and scented markers to be used all year during "enhancement centers". My students will enjoy painting and drawing while developing important social, language, fine motor and problem solving skills.
These supplies will inspire them to use colorful language to describe their art, provide opportunities for rich peer interactions and encourage them to use their imaginations.
Thank you for caring and reading about how you can help my students be happy and successful in kindergarten.
Your support and understanding of the value of art is very much appreciated.
