This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have the opportunity to provide mental health support to students who need it at HES. Many students are unable to access mental health services outside of school due to cost and transportation barriers. This is a title one school and many students are struggling with a lack of resources, homelessness or an unstable home environment. I would like to be able to provide them with a therapeutic environment at the school that feels safe, comfortable, and fun.
Helping students deal with their mental health needs appropriately allows them to feel empowered and increases their ability to succeed in school.
It is very important to me that I be able to provide them with a safe and comfortable environment while they are working through any challenging feelings and situations.
If this project is funded it will not only help me to provide a safe and comfortable environment, but will also give me additional tools to provide increased support to my students.
The current space has very bright lights and tile floor. The rugs and lamp will help provide a more comfortable space for students. Every student is different and some prefer tactile stimulation while others prefer auditory. The speakers and Kinetic sand will allow me to provide options to my students. The workbooks and games will provide activities, worksheets, and resources to better serve students in the school. The children love squishy's and these will be used as rewards for students throughout.
