This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at a Juvenile Detention Center (JDC). Most of our students come from impoverished backgrounds, and many have been homeless prior to incarceration. Our educational programs are designed to support our students' social and emotional needs so they can be successful in school. Data has shown that increased participation in education and the community decrease the recidivism rates of juvenile offenders.
It's hard to imagine, but many of our students come into the center barefoot or without properly fitting shoes.
Furthermore, our growing teens may outgrow their shoes during their incarceration. This project is to get properly fitting, comfortable shoes that our students can not only wear here but keep upon their release or transfer. We successfully got 7 pairs earlier this year with the help of generous donors. We've now given them all away and need more! Help our students get a new lease on life with new shoes!
