This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is full of 18 fun and energetic 5th graders. My students range from a variety of learning, behavioral, and emotional abilities. They attend a public school in a high-need community on the northwest side of Chicago.
About 70% of the students attending our school are from low-income backgrounds.
Although some of my students and their families have faced challenges since the pandemic started, they still love school! They continue to show resilience and kindness to each other, showing their interest in learning as we work through daily technology issues, completing their assignments, participating in class discussions, and generally being a source of pride and joy to me as a teacher.
My Project
As a Title 1 school, the majority of our families need assistance to create a successful learning environment at home for their children to excel. Students are navigating their online learning from home, often in small spaces. Most of my 5th-grade students have many distractions happening at home which makes it extra hard for them to focus - small siblings, siblings engaged in remote learning in the same working space, working parents, background noise, etc. My students need these headphones so that they can focus on their learning while tuning out what is going on around them.
