A Fighting Chance- Students with Exceptionalities Learning Crucial Work-Skills

Help me give my students a fighting chance in learning vital work-readiness skills in a true replica of real-world employment environments. I’m dedicated to students with exceptionalities & Autism, preparing them for fulfilling independent futures in the workplace.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students with exceptionalities can achieve so much if we work hard enough with them. With the support of other teachers, we have set up a Cafe where students are the employees. They serve coffees teas, and other items to the teachers. We have created workstations in the cafe which they set up and maintain. I have designated roles for each in culinary, customer service or leadership. This allows them to cultivate different skills that will be crucial in a post secondary work environment.

My goal is to empower these students by guiding them and providing them invaluable, hands-on experience by replicating real world employment environments.

As we improve this work readiness practice, we need to increase tasks that are done in a work environment. You helping provide a cash register opens new learning opportunities like counting money, fine motor skills and multitasking among other skills. We emphasize punctuality as part of a good work ethic through clocking in and out on time and/or when taking a break.

We strive to have all students with disabilities to have an opportunity to learn and improve their quality of life.
