My Students
Every day I'm excited to start my day because I know that my students will be excited about what I want to teach them. I know that I'll be challenging them in a way that no one has challenged them before.
My school sits in the heart of Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
Most of my students are Caribbean American. They come from all walks of life. Some have family in the military some are recent immigrants. Most of them qualify for free lunch and have to contend with many hardships. While they have exposure to technology they don't see it as a potential career. I want to change that.
My Project
This was a big year for technology at my school. We have several 3D printers and many students have been making. We have a real maker space thing happening. However I started to notice the huge expense it is to buy filament for our 3D printers. More so I noticed the immense amount of waste that is create by failed prints and various other situations. I also want to show my students that technology can and should be eco-friendly. I want to have my students recycle their old prints and even other plastics like plastic water bottles to use for future projects.
A filament extruder for our school's maker space will not only save my school money but it will bring the idea of creating full circle.
If I can take a failed print or that plastic water bottle on the street and convert that to filament for our 3D printers I can teach my students about recycling, self sustaining technology and much more. I want to show them how easy it can be to be innovative and to protect our planet at the same time.
