My students need a larger variety of books for our leveled classroom library to bolster each child's love of reading.

My Students
As my students walk in the the room in the morning, the once empty desks transform to a sea of diversity. Beginning our academic day (and throughout), I ask these little people, "Shall we learn about...?" They reply in eager unison, "We shall!" I look about, seeing little faces ready, willing and able to to tackle the next task that awaits them.
I teach at a school in Los Angeles with a 60% Title I population, and almost half of my class are English Language Learners, some of whom have recently be reclassified.
Regardless, all my students know they are a part of our special community and that everyone brings something unique to the table. This side or that of the socio-economical spectrum, they are equals and deserve an equitable education.
My Project
I need books in my classroom. This past year, I began implementing Reader's Workshop. I am now a huge fan. I re-leveled my books by Guided Reading Level (GRL). I quickly discovered my classroom library was not catering to all of my students. I simply don't have enough books for my readers who have not made benchmark - below basic and far-below basic.
Most of the books I am requesting are targeting my developing readers, as well as my ELD students.
Providing these students with a greater selection of texts will help them with reading and comprehension. A classroom of books that "I can read," along with a balanced literacy program is the right of every child. There is nothing greater than seeing a child "suddenly" love to read... because they can. And what better way to cuddle up with a book than with a little plush "reading buddy?"
More than a third of students from low‑income households
