"The rhythm is in your blood." This African proverb rings true for the hundreds of students that pass through the doors of my classroom each week. Our school has a very successful world music drumming program. We want to continue the our success but need some help.
I have four hundred curious and creative preschool through fifth graders.
We are a Title 1 building but that doesn't hold us back. My students enjoy music, especially drumming. Everyone in the building plays drums! We even have an extra curricular performance drum ensemble that meets before school twice a week in the springtime. This group learns challenging pieces of music and performs these pieces for the rest of the school and for their families. Drumming teaches my students about music in other cultures and challenges them mentally, physically, and musically. It helps build confidence and self-esteem. It is a wonderful outlet for creativity and a lot of fun for everyone.
My Project
My students will use the Tunable Tubano every day for years to come. This drum will be a tool for learning in my music classroom. My students will participate in drumming activities without having to wait for a turn to play. This will help us move more quickly through our drumming curriculum, giving the students a chance to play more challenging pieces. Adding this drum to our music classroom will give another student a chance to participate in our before school drum ensemble. Drumming helps the students learn important music concepts like rhythm, balance, dynamics, form, improvisation. It also teaches them the importance of teamwork, listening to and watching others, and focus.
Donations to this project will greatly benefit the students in my classroom.
Students will be able to participate in drumming lessons immediately instead of having to wait their turn. More students will be able to participate in our extra curricular drumming ensemble, learning more advanced music and performing that music for others. Students now and years into the future will reap the benefits of drumming, such confidence, higher self-esteem, and a feeling of community.
