This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
When a teacher thinks of the word "play" their mind most likely goes to a Shakespeare play, for good reason. While I love "Macbeth," "The Tempest," and "The Merchant of Venice," I think that there are other plays worthy of being studied in a classroom.
I feel that it's important for students to read texts from all different walks of life, and "Fences" more than meets that criteria.
Teaching American Literature, it's really difficult to find a notable play written by a person of color. I want to teach "Fences" because it will be the third text I have taught by a person of color, which will engage different conversations than a Shakespearean play.
I am really excited to teach "Fences," but I can only teach it if I get the copies. Unfortunately, the only playwrights that are on-hand in my school are white men. If I can get these copies, I promise that they will be so appreciated and enjoyed. I hope that I can get students to enjoy reading plays, and I believe "Fences" will allow me to do just that.
