Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Primary students begin to build their mathematical foundations every day they engage with mathematics in a meaningful way. Each school year we offer a Family Math Night for our students to participate in a variety of math games and activities alongside their families.

It is important to me that our students and their families have fun together at our Family Math Night each year, and this is why I am planning a Jurassic Park themed event.

The items for my project will help bring that world to life for our young students. Some items will be adapted into math games, like the Dinosaur Masks and the Inflatable Dinosaurs which will be part of a place value game in which students will have to guess a mystery number and find the dinosaur that holds the matching quantity, or the Volcano Party Favor Boxes which will be part of an exploding volcano game where students decompose numbers. Other items, such as the Dinosaur Pencils and Dinosaur Stickers, will be used for prizes at various stations, such as a station where students will solve math puzzles to unlock a box with a prize inside and a station where students will use their coding skills to complete a dinosaur dig and collect bones along the way.

My goal is for our students and their families to feel like they are at a carnival or an amusement park during this school event, and these items will help build that atmosphere. I can already see the smiles and hear the laughter as the students play, all the while applying strategies they have learned and deepening their mathematical thinking.
