A Digital Microscope! How Cool is That?

My students need a digital microscope and some animal and insect prepared slides.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Burke's classroom raised $155

This project is fully funded

I teach 21 second grade students in a low-income, rural setting. Almost one fourth of my class speaks Spanish at home. Half of my students live in poverty and receive free lunch. Many of my students lack the financial resources for enrichment outside of the classroom. The make-up of my classroom this year is about half gifted students and half struggling readers.

With the class that I have this year, keeping their interest is going to be essential to good instruction. I have such a dichotomy that I am faced with remediation and enrichment at the same time. I need some additional resources to make the most of my time with these youngsters.

Because many of my students have few resources at home for enrichment, I feel that it is my responsibility to provide as many enriching experience as I can. One way that I would like to do that with my class this year and for many years to come is with a digital microscope. I found one that will hook right into your USB port on your computer. The great thing about this is that I have an interactive whiteboard that projects what is on my computer screen onto a 4’X4’ screen for the whole class to see. With a standard microscope, only one person at a time can see the object, but with this handy dandy microscope, the whole class will be able to see what we are observing. I will be able to give them experience that they have never had before. These experiences will translate into background knowledge that they have about a topic or subject. Having prior experiences and background knowledge make you better able to read about it, write about it, talk about it, and learn more about it. This microscope would allow us to really examine the insects that we will study about in science, including our pet tarantula. It will let us look at leaves, feathers, money, food samples – you name it.

Without these materials, my students will not be able to have the kinds of experiences that will help them build extensive background knowledge of the things in the world that interest them. I have no other way to make this happen for my students. We would really appreciate having these materials in our classroom.
