This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, "Be the change you want to see in the world," is the class motto in my "Kids Can Change the World" themed classroom.

I firmly believe these kids can change the world.

My second grade students are future world changers with an amazing set of skills. Within this group, you'll find the questioner with the power to inquire about anything and everything; the informer, who uses life experiences and book knowledge to keep us in the know; the reinforcer, who reminds us of content knowledge and connects it to the real world; the dreamer, who tell us about the endless possibilities; the captain, who keeps the class motivated and at times, in line; and a host of others, making them the most powerful team around.

My Project

While many things have changed in our new reality, one thing definitely hasn't, and that's the power of reading. My students live in an area that was hit especially hard by Corona Virus. They have suffered so much with loss of family and close personal friends, yet they manage to keep amazing spirits, which I believe is in part due to their ability to escape into the world of a good book. After years of students engrossing themselves into amazing books from our library, the effects are definitely evident.

Kids don't ever say, "that book is too shiny and new, I won't read it." However they do pass over books that have ripped or missing pages and state that there aren't any "good books" to read.

Help me supply my students with brand new books that are as diverse as them; books with engaging multicultural characters, books about past and present leaders that look like them and books that give them an escape from this current reality and transform them to a different world.
