Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle school is such an unbearably hard time for so many. My goal in teaching middle school is to make it a little less difficult while giving my students the resources they need to succeed. I teach at a Title I school, which means that the majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
When home life is turbulent, I want my classroom to be a place where students are able to relax and feel at home.
Our school provides food boxes and resources to any families in need, and we pride ourselves on taking care of our own community. Many of our students still enjoy their teachers and coming to school and we feel like it's our job to set them up for success to continue to enjoy learning as they move onto high school. So many of our students have been through so much, we want the school to be a safe place for them.
My Project
As my students are exposed more to American History, so many of them have questions about where they can see themselves in their history books. They also are skeptical that they are getting the whole story. In a time of the Black Lives Matter movement, and towards being anti-racist, I want to encourage my students to ask those questions and learn about a different, minority-affirming, perspective of history. Ronald Takaki's "A Different Mirror for Young People" does just that. It allows students to go through American History through the perspective of the minority groups that so many of them identify with. I would like to provide a copy to each of my students to read in class to spark discussions.
