Help me give my students a more complete look at some civilizations that speak to their own heritage or those around them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students hail from one of the most troubled areas of Oakland, CA. Our middle school serves 99% lower-income families, students who need us to supply them with the tools to succeed. In spite of their environment and the fact that nearly all of our students come from low-income households, they have a thirst for learning new things and relating to the wider world.
My students approach the world with enthusiasm and wonder.
They ask questions not just about the day's lessons, but about everything from cheese to the possibility of other universes. I have a hard time keeping up!
My Project
Everybody knows that learning from history textbooks is not the most ideal way for students to learn about the civilizations that came before us. Too much is left out; only the most shallow details represent whole civilizations and their histories.
My students want to go beyond those sketchy details and dive deeper into the histories and mysteries of the Mesoamericans and the Muslims.
In order to do that, I need to be able to research those civilizations and pull stories that will appeal to the students' interest and bring up important topics that the textbook misses.
In addition, I want to provide my students with their own look at Islamic history, helping them understand some of the problems that plague our world today by showing them how they started.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
