My Project
Each year, my on-level and inclusion sophomores use Sandra Cisneros' classic, The House on Mango Street, as a vehicle to develop close reading skills. Unfortunately, our current copies of the books are showing their well-loved age. Whole sections of pages are beginning to fall out, and covers are cracking off.
Through Cisneros' prose, students are able to explore application of figurative language, the style of vignettes, and make deep thematic connections.
These skills are essential to help further their understanding of other more challenging works of literature. This work also represents a voice that is often underrepresented in the classic canon of American Literature, and a voice that is representative of many of the students in my classroom.
Through this unit, students are able to both build their literary analysis skills and see voices relevant to them within a heralded work of literature.
