This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The text "Obedience to Authority" will be read, annotated and discussed by my senior psychology class this school year. The text is designed to understand the experiment conducted half a century ago by social scientist Stanley Milgram.

The "teacher" is told to administer electroshocks in progressively more painful degrees to the "learner." The teacher--unaware that the learner is an actor receiving no shocks at all--is the real focus of the study.

These controversial and criticized experiments illustrate how people will obey authority regardless of consequences. " Milgram's investigations accomplish what we should expect of responsible social science: to inform the intellect without trivializing the phenomenon of why people do the things they do.

Students today need to have a better understanding of why it is important to understand the thought process and reasoning behind major, historical events. They need to draw connections to how people today make massive mistakes and tend to act based on what they are told to do, not what they have to do, simply by acts of authority. It is vital they have access to texts such as this to broaden their knowledge of human behavior and mental processes.
