A Dash Robot to Learn Coding

My Students

I work in a beautiful mountainous school that is full of adventurous and science-minded students. It is a STEM Magnet elementary with beautiful space and land to use as a resource for learning. Our school integrates STEM throughout the day in our weekly lessons.

I often look for ways to allow innovative methods to encourage problem solving and 21st Century skills.

Our goal is to engage students in learning and give them voice and choice. When students have a voice in their learning, they are more invested and engaged.

My Project

Learning to code is an important skill for all young people now. As our young students grow, the need for computer science skills in the workforce grows tremendously. As educators, it is our job to help students become positive members of our future society.

Teaching young students to code using hands-on activities and programmable robots, like Dash is critical to their learning.

Coding is a skill that will enable more job opportunities to students as they exit school and enter the workforce.

Using coding robots also encourages reluctant readers and mathematicians. To code, students must read what the blocks say to be able to put in the correct directions. To code, students must calculate the amounts of moves and understand directionality for the programming to work correctly. The Dash robot would help us achieve these skills.
