A Curriculum That Meets Our Unique Needs

My students need resources from Teachers Pay Teachers that are engaging in the areas of reading, math, science and social studies.

My Students

I teach a self-contained special education classroom where students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. All of my students are classified with a developmental or cognitive disability, but that does not prevent them from doing their best. I teach at a Title I school in Tennessee where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch under Community Eligibility Provision.

My students are in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade, and spend many years with me so I really get to know what they need to perform their best learning.

We use a modified curriculum that teaches grade level content at their level of understanding.

My Project

My school decided not to renew an online curriculum that I was using. That's okay because the students didn't really care for it as it was a bit boring. Now we have nothing appropriate for my students and all their different ranges of current levels. I have been buying materials to use for centers for reading and math all year, but have discovered several teachers selling curriculum units that incorporate reading, writing, math and science or social studies.

These integrated research units are tied to curriculum standards and are high interest topics for my students.

They are easily downloaded, printed, and ready for students to start learning.

We did a social studies unit of Holidays Around the World during December and the students were so engaged all month long with researching different countries, art projects, and math and literacy centers all around the same topic. In January, we did science with Arctic animals and used Alexa to Google the different facts of each animal. I found a resource that had leveled readers so each child was reading the same book in guided reading groups but at their unique level of fluency and comprehension. For February, I am planning on switching back to social studies with themes of peace, kindness and black history. I need the Teachers Pay Teachers Gift card to be able to continue to provide these rich, standards based units for my students. Students enjoy the fun research projects and the high interest topics keep them focused longer on the hard work of learning.
