A Cultural Melting Pot...But How Did We Get Here??

My students need supplemental literature resources about immigration and population to learn about how the United States and the World has become a melting pot of cultures.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. White's classroom raised $194

My Students

Textbooks are good at providing foundational information about a topic or theme, but they lack real life application and authenticity that can be provided by supplemental resources with real accounts from people of varying cultures and viewpoints.

My class is a mixture of students across cultures, countries, grade levels, and reading levels.

Many of them come from low-income, transient households that do not allow them to be exposed to different cultures and customs across the world. In addition, many of my students are narrow-minded about people who are different than them. By supplementing their life experiences with information about real people from around the world, I hope to not only engage them in class but also open their minds to other cultures that have immigrated into our community.

My Project

The selection of books I have chosen for this unit varies by reading level and cultural story in an attempt to reach every single student in my class. The best part about these books is that they are about other children with whom my students will be able to identify.

I have a foreign exchange student in my class.

He has talked about his experience in traveling to our country for an extended period of time and how estranged people made him feel merely because they did not understand his culture. In addition to teaching culture, this unit will introduce students to the struggles that immigrants face as they move to a new area. Lastly, it will teach my students about some of the cultures that are now embedded into our community due to immigration.
