A Cozy Spot to Fall in Love With Reading

My Project

My students are growing readers who deserve a special, quiet place to curl up with a good book. This project will turn an empty corner of our classroom into a cozy reading retreat with a soft rug, comfy chair, and cushions — giving students a calm space to build focus, reading stamina, and a love of books.

I teach an amazing group of 2nd graders at a Title I public school in North Carolina.

My students come from diverse backgrounds, and many face challenges outside the classroom. Our class includes students receiving EC services, learners with ADHD, academically gifted students, and several who are still developing English language skills.

Despite these challenges, my students come to school every day ready to grow and learn. They are kind, imaginative, and deeply motivated to become better readers. To create this peaceful reading space, we’re asking for a comfy reading chair, a soft rug for students to stretch out on, and a few cozy floor cushions. These items will help us create a calm, inviting corner where students can focus, relax, and enjoy books on their own terms.

Reading is more than an academic skill — it’s a chance for kids to travel, dream, and grow. But right now, our classroom lacks a dedicated space where students can truly enjoy reading. This cozy corner will encourage independent reading and stamina, support social-emotional learning by offering a calm-down space, and help students build ownership and confidence in their reading habits
