My Project
Compassion is a critical skill for children to learn. Elementary schools students put a great value into making a friend and being a friend. I feel like students will gain a deeper understanding of the word Compassion by getting comfortable and having a comfy and cozy space where they can talk about kindness and what it means to be a true friend. We will read the compassion stories in our cozy space and then use the stories to inspire stories to share with others. Students will learn that their voices, ideas, and writing can positively impact their friends, people around them, and around the community.
I'd love to have flexibility seating, posters and some cozy pillows for students to relax and get be able to express their feelings about topics when they need to work through conversations and see life from another perspective.
Students will learn to see the world through others' eyes by reading stories about empathy, followed by whole class discussions to reflect on characters' feelings and actions. They will create journals from another person's perspective, describing their emotions and experiences. Sharing these entries will enhance the class' collective empathy.
Students will also be able to use this area to keep their journals on compassion and materials to execute compassion, kindness, and empathy activities throughout the day. Throughout the year, students will complete rating scales for their feelings about compassion and empathy. Students will also journal about their learning experiences. The space will also be used for a clam down corner! Please support my students in executing this project!
