This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In my classroom my students have a love for reading and being around one another. I want to create a space with a rug where my students can go to be comfortable with their favorite book in hand. In this space I would like my students to participate in circle time where I will check in on where their headspace is and how they can be better supported.
My students come from all types of living situations, some are asylum seekers living in shelters, others live with 6-8 family members in a one or two bedroom, and others travel 1/1.5 hours to school every day.
My hopes for this rug is to be a safe center of comfort and a reminder for my students to take breaks when they need one. They also need chair pockets. I want them to have an area in the classroom where they can wind down, grab a cozy seat cushion and connect back to their own minds.
