My Students
Where do you go to enjoy a good book? Do you have a favorite place that allows you to relax and get lost in the pages of your book? My students love reading but our classroom doesn't have a good reading area. I want to give my students a cozy area in the classroom that encourages them to read.
I have 25 enthusiastic and creative second grade students.
They love coming to school and are eager to learn. Our school has over 1,100 students from pre-k to eighth grade. It is a Title 1 school, which means that many of my students' families are living below the poverty line. Approximately 85% of the students receive free lunch.
My Project
In order to encourage my students to become lifelong readers, I would like to set up a reading corner in my classroom. The beanbag seats and soft seats will provide my students with a comfortable area to sit down and become immersed in good books. The sets of books will help to build our classroom library and give my students more books to choose from.
My students enjoy books, but the only place they have to read is at a their tables of six children. Needless to say, they have trouble focusing on their books for any length of time because they are uncomfortable or are easily distracted by their peers. A comfortable reading corner will encourage my students to pick up books and try reading even when they get frustrated and want to give up. It will also help them to remain focused on their reading for longer periods of time because they will have a comfortable and more private area to read.
Every day I remind my students of how important reading is and that the only way to become better at it is by reading.
The beanbag seats, soft seats, and books will allow me to create a cozy reading corner that will reinforce this idea. It will be an inviting place with minimal distractions where my students will feel safe to practice their reading skills. They will enjoy reading in this area and as a result, will come to enjoy reading rather than thinking of it as work.
