My Students
I teach a vibrant, diverse group of 3rd graders in New York City.
My classroom includes students who learn in many different ways—some who need quiet spaces to focus, others who need movement, and many who thrive when surrounded by books, beauty, and inspiration. For 24 years, I’ve poured my heart (and my paycheck) into creating a welcoming space for them. Now, I’m asking for your help to build a classroom where every student feels seen, safe, and excited to learn.
My Project
This project will help create a classroom environment that nurtures all learners, especially those with sensory needs, attention challenges, and those who simply need a little comfort and inspiration to feel at home.
Here’s what we’re requesting:
Flexible seating options like floor cushions, wobble stools, and cozy chairs so students can choose the spaces that help them focus and feel calm.
Noise-canceling headphones to support my students on the autism spectrum and those who benefit from quiet during independent work and reading.
Bookshelves and soft book lights to build a cozy, inviting reading nook where students can curl up with a book and get lost in a story.
Motivational posters featuring BIPOC heroes to ensure students see themselves represented and valued in the classroom.
Growth mindset posters to reinforce the message that mistakes are part of learning and that effort, persistence, and self-belief matter.
The Impact
This project supports equity, inclusion, and joy in learning. For students who struggle with focus, noise, or traditional seating, these tools provide comfort and agency. For students from marginalized communities, these posters send a powerful message: You matter. You belong here. And for all of my students, this project will help build a classroom that feels like a second home.
