Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 9th through 12th graders who are all tackling extremely challenging high school math curriculum. The students in my classes range from 13 to 18 years old. About 80% of my students have Individualized Education Plans and/or are English language learners. Most of them live and go to school in East Harlem, a diverse and culture-filled neighborhood in Manhattan. The majority of my students live in low-income housing, public housing projects, or even shelters. Many have come into the classroom carrying a baggage of trauma that most people have not had to deal with in a lifetime.
Despite all that my students have to deal with outside of our school doors, they are used to coming to school EVERY SINGLE DAY—with enthusiastic smiles on their faces, ready to learn.
Our school has always been a safe and comforting place for my students who relied on the school staff for emotional support and the school building for food and warmth.
My Project
These materials will be used to help my students feel more at home and cozy in their classroom. After enduring this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, students need a place to feel safe and at-ease. They are nervous, scared and worried about the uncertain future.
The materials in this project will help my students feel like their classroom is more of a home.
They will feel a sense of comfort and ease, and this will translate into better learning outcomes. Several of my students suffer from anxiety and depression. Changing our classroom space to make it more comfortable will support my students socially and emotionally.
