My Students

Phil Collins once said, "In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn". Everyday I learn something new about my students which enables me to reflect on my skills. In this way I can make instruction more meaningful for my students and challenge them to always give of their best.

My students are my "grape bunch" because, like their namesake, they are sweet and worthy of our attention.

Despite their disabilities, each student brings a special charm to the classroom that is seen on a daily basis. Their love of learning is heartwarming and reminds me daily of why I teach. Ours is currently a Title 1 school that follows the IB curriculum. My students are often engaged in discovery based learning striving valiantly, despite their many challenges, to explore the world in which they live. It is remarkable how they have grown, not just physically, but also intellectually over the past months. I encourage them to always give of their best so that they can achieve maximum results possible. Their responses are inspiring.

My Project

Can you imagine sweltering in a classroom during the months of May, June and September because the AC unit is broken? Well, this is what happens in my room. The school's AC unit is unreliable and seems to have permanent issues despite many attempts to fix it. My students are special needs students with varying disabilities. Some are unable to focus for long periods at a time. This is compounded in days of extreme heat. We urgently need a portable AC unit that would keep the temperature down in the classroom so that students can work effectively. My students need to work in an environment that is conducive to learning, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Please assist us in this worthwhile effort to make learning more enjoyable during the hot months. A portable AC unit would be a treasure for my students who do not need the burden of heat to distract their learning.

According to John Ciardi, "the classroom should be an entrance into the world, not an escape from it".

Extreme heat can make our room unbearable during the early summer months. It is imperative that my students with special needs work in a pleasant and temperature controlled atmosphere. A portable AC unit will go a long way in making my students feel more relaxed and comfortable so that they can continue to give of their best. Please help!
