My Students
The United States Constitution daunts lawyers, political scientists, and scholars alike. My Eleventh Grade students are expected to master this complex document!
My students are an eclectic collection of characters who genuinely care about each other.
Our school prides itself in its full-inclusion environment that welcomes all students into all classes no matter what their learning challenges may be. As a small school, they view their classmates as extended family and are very (perhaps too) involved in helping each other succeed with their academics and life outside of school as well. This is remarkable considering that our population is diverse and close to a fifth of our school's population has recently arrived in this country. For some students, the home financial situation has led some school staff to fund-raise to provide basics for students who lack them.
My Project
The New York State curriculum requires eleventh graders to master United States History and Government. Fundamental to this curriculum is an understanding of our government and the way it is based on the Constitution. Students find the language of the Constitution challenging and generally stray far from the language of the document when learning the way the Constitution operates. With your donation, students will be able to analyze the Constitution using the original language alongside the explanations that these texts provide. This will hopefully empower students to interpret the Constitution and take ownership of some of the language and structure that is inherent to the document.
With these texts, no matter what their learning and languages may be, my students will have a chance at mastering the language and structure of the United States Constitution.
