This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine your life without a computer at your finger tips. Imagine having to share your computer with 12 other people all day! Imagine a computer, that doesn't really work... it's just not fair! Unfortunately, this situation is the reality for my students!
Nothing is more motivating than teaching children who WANT to learn.
I teach 12 bright, enthusiastic, and motivated special education students who are in grades 3, 4, and 5. This is quite the range to have in one classroom, so it is obvious that the students are all on different levels. However, they are still always striving to achieve success. The students have learning disabilities, behavior problems, speech impairments and emotional disabilities. They come from a high-needs neighborhood in New York. Many of the students are excited to come to school and are motivated to learn despite their disabilities and the socio-economic status of their families. For a teacher, this is quite inspiring.
My Project
In our school, many of the classrooms have 2-3 computers for the students to use. In our classroom there is one computer that is very old and out dated for the students to access. My students are discouraged by the fact that other students have the privilege of classroom computers that work and we do not. They love every opportunity to use computers and more and more are expected to do so. Since the students have many different disabilities, the computer is a great resource to have in the classroom. Not only are the students able to access great technology with the Internet and educational computers games, but the computer allows me to create materials and access necessary technology to integrate into lessons. The computer is a resource that the special education students would benefit from.
With your help, my students could experience the Internet and computer resources.
They could produce projects like the other classes do and share their work. With the high-needs status of the neighborhood, the students are not able to access this technology at home, so it would be wonderful to expose them to this at school. Donors of this project will greatly impact the lives of my special education students. I look forward to sharing their success with you! THANKS!!
