A Communication Environment for Play and Learning

My Project

School closures related to COVID-19 impacted many preschool-aged students during a time crucial to their development in social play and language. Opportunities that aid in pre-academic skills for early literacy, joint attention, turn-taking, and symbolic play were lost. Quarantines and face masking created difficulties in social-emotional learning that are essential prior to beginning kindergarten for academic success. For military families that already move frequently, registering for academic and social support programs became nearly impossible.

This project strives to create a child-led, play-based communicative environment in a school for students from military families.

This will occur in individual and group language therapy. Play that is meaningful, actively engaging, socially interactive, iterative, and joyful leads to deeper learning. Children learn best through play as it builds on what the child already knows, is natural, can happen anywhere, and can be used by parents at home for carryover. Play creates opportunities for spontaneous language through labeling, requesting, describing, sequencing, spatial concepts, speech sounds, "wh" questions, verbs, pronouns; the list goes on and on! Additionally, children learn new vocabulary best through multiple exposures, explicit information, and relating words thematically; all of which can be targeted naturally with themed toys!

As a first year speech-teacher in the 2020-2021 school year, I needed to purchase more electronic products for virtual learning and less symbolic toys to facilitate hands-on activities. Your contributions help to bring "play" back to my classroom by forming relationships created through interest-led activities.
