Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as Attention-Deficit, Dyslexia, Social-Emotional, and Autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with social-economic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.
Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!
Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!
My Project
My reading space is composed of crates used as seating tools for my students to read in the classroom library. Although, my students will sit on them, they are quite hard and uncomfortable. A small kid-sized table is used to place books into bins as there is a lack of bookshelves for books in our classroom library- the big books lean up against the corner of a wall. The rug for the upcoming school year also needs to be replaced. I want my students, who are diverse learners with reading disabilities to read and relax in comfort. They are already reluctant to read, which will be the biggest challenge this year; however, I want to ensure that the classroom environment is not only print-rich, but have the resources to encourage my students to build a love for reading!
What joy it is to sit on a soft surface, relax and open your mind to a good book!
The Read & Relax Comfy Couch and Read & Relax Comfy Chair
will not only provide a comfortable sitting space for reading, it has space for the organization of books through plastic book baskets. The Sling Bookshelf will house the "big books" in the library for students to read. The rug will allow additional sitting space for students who want to lay on the rug and read. The Dr. Seuss - banner will exemplify our class room that "Reading is Fun!"
