My students need to make good choices when they are working, and because they are six and seven years old it is important to have comfortable and appropriate places for them to sit.

My Students

I am lucky to work in a very diverse elementary school! We are in the center of a college town, and are able to not only teach the children in the local community, but we are also able to support the diverse cultural population that come to take advantage of our great university.

In my classroom, which is usually about 25 students each year, I am often fortunate enough to work with students from four or five different countries, and a range of students with some physical handicaps.

This diversity is an amazing learning experience for not only the children, but the teachers as well.

My Project

I have found that children who are five, six, seven or sixteen are all incredibly active, antsy and squirmy! I have done an enormous amount of research, and have checked with my many amazing colleagues about creative seating for students. The consensus is overwhelming, and it all points in the direction of flexible seating.

Flexible seating will mean stools, large exercise balls and ottomans in addition to their regular chairs.

Children are all so different, and I would love to give each child a place to learn that is comfortable and appropriate for their own needs.

I think the key to keeping children focused is to help them feel comfortable. I would LOVE to be able to share these various seating options with the kids, and see where it takes them!
