Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I believe that early childhood is a time to foster learning in children. My students are from the Bronx. They are always curious and eager to learn. They benefit from hands-on learning experiences but are also fascinated by technology. Every day, I look forward to the conversations that I have with my students.
This school year was the first time that I told my students my first name.
When my students asked my name, they told me to tell the truth. It occurred to me that my students wanted a more personable relationship with me. I think that learning my name made me relatable. They started to realized that I had an identity outside of being their teacher. During our social studies lessons, names became a popular topic. I was able to not only foster an environment of learning, but also one where my students developed their self-esteem. These interactions transcended in various academic and personal interactions. I believe in my students and would like to provide opportunities to develop as a whole.
My Project
The materials requested will make a difference in my students' learning by providing flexibility in seating. Engagement in learning requires flexibility. Students feel empowered and more engaged when they are provided with choices in their learning. This applies to their work environment as well.
Flexible seating allows my students to work together and collaborate in new ways every day.
They are learning to problem solve, not only by choosing their seat, but also by working with, and around, other students.
Flexible seating allows the space to quickly partner up, work in small groups, or work together as a class. The world is a fast-paced, ever-changing environment that is full of problems and choices. How can we expect our students to become independent problem solvers if we are constantly making all of their decisions for them?
