My Students
My school is a Middle School in Flushing, Queens. There are about 750 students from 6th- 8th grade. Many of our students are first generation Americans. Over 27% of our school population are English Language Learners and 100% of the school receives free breakfast and lunch.
My students are bright, enthusiastic and eager to learn about topics ranging from emotional regulation to study skills and self-control.
As a school counselor, many of the children that see me each week for group and individual counseling have special needs and have learning and social obstacles to face in their home and school lives.
Our counseling space needs to feel comfortable, inviting, and inspiring. I want the counseling office to be a safe space where children feel welcome and comfortable to be express themselves. At this time, a new seating area would help define our counseling space and make the office more inviting and comfortable. It would also provide a waiting area where students and parents can sit comfortably while they are waiting to see a counselor.
My Project
Our guidance office is available to all students at any time of the day. It is frequented by hundreds of students each week. The students would love to be able to have a comfortable, clean, safe place to sit within the guidance office. At times, there are many children waiting to be seen by a counselor and having a comfortable sofa to sit on while they are waiting would make a big difference.
Having chart paper, markers and scissors would be so helpful when going into classes to do guidance lessons, during student ambassador groups, and for our small group counseling sessions.
Our students are creative and they need these supplies to help them express themselves in a safe and healthy way.
