My students need a comfortable, customizable reading nook with in the library to curl up. A welcoming space encourages kids to treasure the act of reading and associate it with positive feelings.

My Students
HES is located in an urban part of Chattanooga, TN. My students are deeply committed to family ties and have a rapidly developing sense of social justice. The tenacity and determination to learn I see in my students transcends their socioeconomic station. A love of reading and improved literacy will give these children the best opportunity to change their futures and help them make the world into the amazing place they dream of.
School should be a place where it is safe to express yourself, try new things, have big ideas, and be yourself.
It is my goal to make the library into a welcome oasis for my students.
My Project
Learning environment plays a significant role in how students absorb information. By cultivating a safe and harmonious space, educators are able to amplify learning possibilities.
My dream for the HES library is that students would have a reading nook where they would feel comfortable and safe, where they could continue to associate reading with positive emotions, thus leading to greater literacy gains.
Along with the reading nook, I am also looking to add to my "calm down" corner, a space where students dealing with angry or sad feelings can take a moment to recoup before rejoining the class. One pillow and the Etch a Sketch will be a part of the calm down corner setup.
